Hi all, I am thrilled to announce my new book, Algebra-Driven Design. It's the culmination of two rewrites and a year of research, and comes with a foreword written by John Hughes, the inventor of QuickCheck. In the book, we take a fundamentally different approach to the software design process, focusing on deriving libraries from equations, algebraic manipulation and well-studied mathematical objects. The resulting code is guaranteed to be free of abstraction leaks, and in many cases, actually writes itself. If that sounds like the sort of software you'd like to write, I'd highly encourage you to give it a read. You can buy a copy or check out a sample over at. I'm working on getting hard-cover books out, but that's not going to happen for a few months. But please don't let that stop you from picking up the digital copy --- I'm planning to over hard-copies at cost of printing (~$20) to anyone who's bought a pdf. Please share the good news!

Toulmin’s Essay on Probability : askphilosophy
which he cited in his original Nature article. The response by Doctor et al. clearly states (Appendix A of the supplementary material) that the Meder et al. paper tests EU with an incorrect experimental setting. Peters does not address this. Furthermore, Peters goes on to claim that people maximize the long-run growth rate of their wealth. This is almost trivially false, since people care about consumption/labor/etc as opposed to hoarding currency - his theory does not account for this nor can it be modified to do so. Thirdly, he still appears to think he's critiquing modern economics, while being unfamiliar with any literature on choice/decision theory from the past 30 years. Furthermore, his particular critique of EU - that it is incorrect to use in dynamic choice problems where ergodicity is violated - is both wrong and irrelevant to most results in modern economics. Overall, Peters does not actually have a rebuttal.

Hey All, Long time lurker, posting for the first time here. I've been reading "The Uses of Argument" by Stephen Toulmin (first published ~1950). Here is a direct download link for the book (pdf). This book is a collection of five essays. In the third chapter/essay, he establishes his famous argument notation (now called Toulmin's notation). The overall intent is to devise a means for expressing "practical" arguments that we encounter in every day life rather than jumping directly to a mathematical logic notation which he claims removes important details/nuance about every day arguments. I am having trouble understanding the point of Toulmin's second essay on the meaning of probability. This seems to be a foundational work that will (I hope, otherwise what's the point! ) be used in subsequent essays. Here is what I understand: The word "probably" is a modal term which has an invariant meaning ("force" or implication) across multiple fields of argumentation. The first essay defines modal terms and the notion of a force for these terms.

Math is simply so objective that even small deviations show deep impairments in logical reasoning, as with the age old tale of your dad screaming that he can't believe you're so stupid to not 'get' ⅓ x ¼, and subconsciously avoiding math like the plague afterwards. But when you think about it, didn't math equally come from 'nothing'? Or, phrased a bit more clearly, had to go from observations and imaginative speculation honed carefully into the logical domain we'll traumatize six year olds about today? The mere idea of a more creative methodology in math sounded like something I could only consider once I was forty in the deep caves of graduate math, unless I wanted to end up with an F now. The question "when will I use these concepts in real life? " held a heavy responsibility being the only language I knew to express my frustration on the rigid, abstract, and even demeaning position math held in my life and my desire to have something more with the concept that seems to compose everything together.
